The Charlotte Knights

We made a pit stop in Charlotte, North Carolina to visit a good friend and fellow MCS 35er (that's Maine Coast Semester) Paul Schifflet. Paul, Raleigh (Paul's friend), Dan and I all headed to the Charlotte Knights game on Tuesday to catch a little Triple-A baseball action.

The game itself was not incredibly interesting. It was a good pitchers' duel with a few scattered homeruns by both teams. The four of us were slightly preoccupied with a few different things, such as the teenage boy walking aimlessly and silently through the crowd trying to sell cotton candy as well as a group of guys celebrating a 21st birthday. The game only got better for us as Homer threw me a Knights' t-shirt, and Raleigh snagged a foul ball, which almost hit Paul square between the eyes. And there was the added entertainment of conversing with this random kid that came down by our seats with a popcorn bucket as a glove. He desperately wanted a foul ball.

Now, you would think that the fun would have ended after the Knights' victory, but our night was just getting started. As we were about to leave the parking lot, Raleigh brought to our attention the fact that our front right tire was flat. So, without skipping a beat, we began our attempt at changing the tire. There really isn't that much to say here. Just imagine everything that four teenage boys can screw up while changing a flat tire and that's pretty much what happened. The first attempt ended with a severely bent car jack. We agreed to give another car a jump if they would let us use their jack, seeing as ours was out of commission, but they left us high and dry in the parking lot. An hour, two different car jacks and a lot of candid pictures later, we were back on the road to Paul's house.

It was a pretty crazy evening, and I wouldn't have changed it for the world.

Now we're in Baltimore, where yesterday we watched the Orioles beat the Yankees on the second walk-off walk of our road trip. Tomorrow morning we head to Philadelphia for fireworks night at Citizens Bank Ballpark. But I think we are going to make a stop in Delaware at the request of one of Dan's high school friends. Either way, we are moving up the East Coast and don't plan of stopping until Maine.

Weekend trip to Florida

Well, plan and simple, we're just kind of glad to be out of Florida. The weather was either way too hot to support any life forms or an unwelcoming blend of thunder and lightning. And then the baseball games down there were...well...this quotation of Dan's kind of sums it all up for you. "I don't think I could ever become a Devil Rays fan, because I like baseball too much."

It was Don Zimmer "Turn Back the Clock" Night in Tampa Bay, which was a fun event actually. But that's exactly what it was, an event, not a baseball game. We walked into Tropicana Field, which looks strangely like a circus tent, and were greeted by girls in poodle skirts on roller skates dancing to the tunes of Elvis Presley. But even without the 1950's, we were astounded to find that there was an incredible amount of things to do at the game. Yes, there was the Batting Cage, the Speed Pitch, and the Personalized Bat Center. All of those are normal stadium hot spots. But in addition to all of those, Tropicana Field also sported their very own Feel of the Game, replica baseball field section, a Make Your Own Baseball Card station, a Baseball Trivia game show, the Ted Williams Museum, and the Rey Cuesta Cigar Bar in the Upper Deck. You may be wondering why there is so much to do in the stadium, and the only logical reason is that just watching the Devil Rays isn't entertainment enough. Go figure.

Then we drove down to Miami where we found that you can do a lot of things at Dolphin Stadium as well. You can get a tan, sweat off a couple pounds in the sauna and watch a game all at the same time. Everyone wears a circle of sweat around the lower back area like it is a fashion statement there. And by everyone I mean the under 10,000 at the baseball game.

We left a little early to drive the 350 miles up the coast to Jacksonville where were so kindly greeted by the Best Western Inn at 10 pm.
